Signs of the Times

"When it is evening, you say, 'It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.'  And in the morning, 'There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.'  Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times?"

What the Bible teaches about Speaking in Tongues

by Bill Wong

There are many churches today, mostly from the Pentecostal and True Jesus Church, which believe that speaking in tongues is the gift of God’s holy spirit which is the best or even only sure sign to identify you as a child of God who has the spirit of God within them.

This speaking in tongues is manifested with the uttering of sounds that cannot be understood.  It is not any language known to man, and some say it is an “angelic” language.  It is unintelligible and sounds like broken syllables resembling babbling or making strange melodic sounds; there may even be uncontrollable laughter and shrieking.  When the holy spirit of God is reported to fill the people, these other things sometimes occur with speaking in tongues or entirely on their own: feelings of ecstasy, uncontrollable body movements, stillness or no expression at all, sensations of warmth/heat, weeping, being knocked onto the floor and stuck there unable to get up, and other strange behaviors.  The sounds that are uttered can also occur with the people acting and sounding like animals.

This is putting a focus on emotions and physical sensation which is not taught in the Bible at all.  Indeed, this type of focus is dangerous, because mankind is easily deceived by their mind and senses; it is a trick and snare that the enemy, Satan knows all too well and uses all the time.

This is what many have been led to believe what speaking in tongues is.  However, are the descriptions above really what the Bible teaches about speaking in tongues, such as what it really is and what its significance really is?

The Bible tells us that whatever we see or hear must be searched within its pages to see if it is really so according to God’s Bible truth:

Acts 17:

10   Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea.

     When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11   These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness,

      and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.   (NKJV)

When we do read the Bible, we must accurately handle what the Bible tells us and apply its truths to our lives:

2 Timothy 2:

15    Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed,

      accurately handling the word of truth.   (NASB)

The Bible truth about what speaking in tongues really is and what its true significance is looks nothing like what these churches teach.  In other words, the Bible shows us that these people/churches have been deceived, and are deceiving others, about speaking in tongues.  Let us briefly discuss what the Bible has to say about this important topic.

What the Bible says speaking in tongues is

The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurs in the Book of Acts chapter 2.  Just before the Lord Jesus ascended to heaven, He told His disciples to wait for the power of God’s holy spirit to come upon them shortly.  As the 120 disciples were gathered together in the upper room on the Day of Pentecost, holy spirit fell upon them like fire and they began to speak in tongues:

Acts 2:

1   When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.

2   And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.

3   Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.

4   And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5   And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven.

6   And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused,
    because everyone heard them speak in his own language.

7   Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans?

8   And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born?

9   Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,

10   Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

11   Cretans and Arabs --- we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God."   (NKJV)

When we read the account of what happened during this very first event of speaking in tongues, we are told exactly what speaking in tongues is. It is very evident that speaking in tongues IS speaking in earthly languages that can be understood by men and women. Verses 6-11 make it absolutely clear that the disciples filled with holy spirit spoke the languages of the people in the crowds and the crowds understood them.

The bewildered people listening and understanding their own languages being spoken by the disciples who have no right to know the language is expressed a few times in this chapter. The different kinds of people/languages are even listed for us so that there can be no denying that speaking in tongues is speaking in a human language, which makes the Bible truth stand out all the more obvious:

Speaking in tongues is miraculously speaking in another human language by someone who normally could not/did not, which can be understood by the hearer in attendance.

Since this is quite obvious and it is the very first incident of speaking in tongues, the Bible lays it out for all of us what speaking in tongues actually is and what we should expect. We see the belief of most people is completely wrong about what speaking in tongues is. How is it possible today that most people believe it is incoherent sounds that cannot be understood by anyone at all? Many people have been deceived and are deceiving others about what the Bible truth really is.

It is not a strange language that is unearthly and unknown, but it is the ability to speak other languages for the sole purpose of making people understand the gospel of God.  Its purpose is to preach the gospel to the nations so they know God and His plan of eternal salvation for us:  faith in His only-begotten son Jesus the Messiah, whose atonement for our sins and resurrection conquers death and gives eternal life, and He will return as king over the Kingdom of God.  In short, that He is both the suffering servant and King of Kings who has conquered all the enemies of God, both spiritual and physical.

Does the Bible say it is the only gift

After ignoring the Biblical truth of what speaking in tongues actually is, people then go on to make their false doctrine of tongues be the major or only spiritual “proof” that you belong to God and have His holy spirit within you.  But once again, the Bible truth plainly shows that this is wrong – speaking in tongues is not the only gift of the spirit.  There are many other gifts and each person is different and will have a different gift:

1 Corinthians 12:

1   Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:

2   You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.

3   Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed,

    and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

4   There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

5   There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.

6   And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.

7   But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all:

8   for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,

9   to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,

10   to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits,

     to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.

11   But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

12   For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body,

     being many, are one body, so also is Christ.

13   For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body --- whether Jews or Greeks,

     whether slaves or free --- and have all been made to drink into one Spirit.

14   For in fact the body is not one member but many.

15   If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?

16   And if the ear should say, "Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body," is it therefore not of the body?

17   If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling?

18   But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased.

19   And if they were all one member, where would the body be?

20   But now indeed there are many members, yet one body.

21   And the eye cannot say to the hand, "I have no need of you"; nor again the head to the feet, "I have no need of you."

22   No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.

23   And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor;

     and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty,

24   but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it,

25   that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.

26   And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

27   Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

28   And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles,

     then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

29   Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?

30   Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

31   But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.    (NKJV)

Romans 12:

3   For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think;

    but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

4   For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,

5   so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.

6   Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly:

    if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith;

7   if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching;

8   or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence;

    he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.       (NASB)

Ephesians 4:

1   I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,

2   with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,

3   endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

4   There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

5   one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

6   one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

7   But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ's gift.

8   Therefore He says: " When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men."

9   (Now this, "He ascended" --- what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

10   He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

11   And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

12   for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

13   till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man,

     to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

14   that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine,

     by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

15   but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head --- Christ ---

16   from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies,

     according to the effective working by which every part does its share,

     causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.       (NKJV)

The Bible makes it quite evident that we should be happy with the gift we have and not covet what others have, because we are all parts of the same body of Christ and are members of one another.  We all are key members of the same body with important roles to play.  There are many gifts of God that are distributed to the body; everyone is a different member and will have a different gift from another member.  We cannot build a doctrine around this false speaking in tongues which is not according to what the Bible says it is, and then make this error worse by also falsely stating that speaking in tongues is the only or a defining gift for everyone, citing it as “the proof” of your faith.

How the Bible says we receive holy spirit

At this point, we must also make it clear that the Bible shows the only way to receive God’s holy spirit and any of these gifts of the spirit, is upon the laying on of hands after baptism (which is by immersion in the Bible).

The holy spirit is not received, as the True Jesus Church teaches, by persistent prayer in a specific manner that it teaches you to do.

Acts 2:

38   Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins;

       and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.   (NKJV)

Acts 8:

12   But when they believed Philip as he preached good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ,

     they were baptized, both men and women.

13   Even Simon himself believed, and after being baptized he continued with Philip.

     And seeing signs and great miracles performed, he was amazed.

14   Now when the apostles at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent to them Peter and John,

15   who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit,

16   for he had not yet fallen on any of them, but they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17   Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.

18   Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands, he offered them money,

19   saying, “Give me this power also, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”   (ESV)

Acts 19:

1   And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions,

    came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples

2   he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”

    So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.”

3   And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?”  So they said, “Into John’s baptism.”

4   Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance,

    saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.”

5    When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6    And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.   (NKJV)

There are rare exceptions to the sequence of baptism to be followed by laying on of hands, but they always occur together (for example, Acts 10:44-48 has the first Gentile Cornelius receive the holy spirit, but then the apostle Peter immediately baptizes him afterwards).

It should be noted that in addition to the false speaking in tongues, the True Jesus Church teaches sacramental requirements for salvation which makes it works driven.  We do not ever do things to be saved, but when we are saved, then we are changed.

It also teaches visions; for example, stating that people can see the blood of Christ in the baptismal waters.  This is not in the Bible and the concentration on sacraments and manifestation of Jesus’ blood reminds us of Roman Catholic practices which are also not Biblical.  However, there are other Christian groups that teach on visions and visualization.  We must be reminded that seeing visions and using visualization (by anyone) can be false and lead us astray.  These visions can just be in our imaginations or worse – when the mind is laid bare for external entities to enter in it can influence what we see, feel and believe and influence who we are.

Does the Bible say speaking in tongues is preferable

Concerning the importance of these gifts of the spirit, we see that according to the Bible, not only is speaking in tongues the speaking of human languages for the sake of spreading the gospel and tongues is not the only gift of the spirit, but God even tells us that all of these gifts are nothing compared to love which is what we are to have first above all.

God makes it clear to us that Godly love is even greater and what we should strive for:

1 Corinthians 13:

1  Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.

2   And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith,

    so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

3   And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned,

    but have not love, it profits me nothing.

4   Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up;

5   does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil;

6   does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;

7   bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

8   Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues,

    they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

9   For we know in part and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child;

    but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known.

13 And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.    (NKJV)

The Bible then goes on to give us even more detail about speaking in tongues so that there can be no misunderstanding about what speaking of tongues actually is and why.

In 1 Corinthians 14 we are given this information:

1 Corinthians 14:

1   Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

2    For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him;

     however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

3    But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

4    He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

5    I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied;

     for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets,

     that the church may receive edification.

6    But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation,

     by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

7    Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds,

     how will it be known what is piped or played?

8    For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?

9    So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken?

     For you will be speaking into the air.

10   There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance.

11   Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks,

     and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.

12   Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

13   Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

14   For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15   What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding.

     I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

16   Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks,

     since he does not understand what you say?

17   For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18   I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

19   yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also,

     than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20   Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

21   In the law it is written:“With men of other tongues and other lipsI will speak to this people;And yet, for all that,

      they will not hear Me, says the Lord.

22   Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers;

      but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

23   Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues,

     and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

24   But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all.

25   And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face,

      he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

26   How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue,

     has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

27   If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

28   But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

29   Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.

30   But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent.

31   For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

32   And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33   For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

34   Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak;

     but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.

35   And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

36   Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached?

37   If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual,

      let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

38   But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39   Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

40   Let all things be done decently and in order.   (NKJV)

So in addition to the Bible stating that love is greatest and there are many gifts where each person is different with a different gift, we can see the Bible makes it absolutely clear that speaking in tongues is not even the most preferable of the gifts of the spirit.  The Bible tells us clearly up front that speaking in tongues does not rank high among the gifts and is not what we really should be hoping for (it should be noted that 1 Cor 12 gives us two lists of the gifts of holy spirit and both times speaking in tongues is last). It is beyond understanding how churches can state it is a defining proof of who you are and they get away with it.

The Bible goes on to say if there is someone speaking in tongues, there MUST be an interpreter and if there is no interpreter, than the speaker should be silent.  The apostle Paul even states that if there is no interpreter and there is still speaking in tongues going on, it would NOT edify or build up the body of Christ.  However, do we see these truths about tongues being practiced?  What is happening today is just people bursting into fits of uncontrollable utterances that cannot be understood.  Firstly, it is not even human language but just noises, and secondly, there is no interpreter (it would not be any use because it is not human language to begin with).  In other words, if this current movement of speaking in tongues followed the Bible truth, there would be no speaking in tongues at all in these churches.

Please note that verses 21-22 in combination with the context of Isaiah 28 from which they derive.  It is saying that the Jews will not listen to God even though God gives Gentiles (men of different tongues/languages) the ability to speak to them.  The context of verses 21-22 by itself would also apply to any non-believer.  These verses confirm Acts 2:1-11 --- that speaking in tongues is speaking in a foreign language which permits communication between foreign peoples and spreading the gospel (note 1 Corinthians 14:9-11 where without interpreting we would be like barbarians/foreigners to each other and cannot understand one another).  Paul is stating that miraculously speaking in other languages should have made the Jews (or anybody) realize that God may be behind it, because how can someone suddenly start speaking a language they have never known before, like German, Greek, Japanese, Hebrew, Chinese, etc, specifically in a situation/circumstance to preach the gospel?

In 1 Corinthians 14, we are reminded again of what speaking in tongues really is and what its purpose and position is among the gifts of holy spirit.  The Bible tells us plainly that prophesying (propounding upon the things of God) is preferred and is for  mature believers, but speaking in tongues is only for the beginner.  In other words, to prophesy is to have meat, but speaking in tongues is milk.  The Bible is saying is that speaking in tongues is used to draw foreign people to the gospel, but once they are drawn initially, it is the Word of God itself that carries them and grows them in their walk.  While both gifts are given by God, one is more obviously miraculous/supernatural in manifestation.  This is speaking in tongues, and it is why it is primarily for new believers; its very nature and manifestation gets the attention of the people and draws them.

What the Bible declares the false tongues is

When we read the Bible to see what it has to say about speaking in tongues, we find out that it tells us a lot.

Let us now summarize:

1.  The Bible tells us that speaking in tongues is the miraculous ability to speak in

      a foreign language in order to communicate the gospel to all the nations.

2.  The Bible tells us that receiving the holy spirit of God occurs after baptism upon the laying of hands.

3.  The Bible tells us that there are many gifts of the holy spirit of which speaking in tongues is only one.

4.  The Bible tells us that everyone has a different gift, but each person still has an important

      part to play as a member of the body of Christ.

5.  The Bible tells us that love is greater than the gifts of the holy spirit.

6.  The Bible tells us that speaking in tongues is not preferred among the gifts of the spirit.

When we go point by point and look at what the Bible has to say about speaking in tongues, it becomes very obvious that what people actually believe and practice regarding speaking in tongues, resembles nothing like what the Bible describes.  In fact, it is actually the opposite.

The fact that this false speaking in tongues even exists at all, even though the Bible clearly shows it does not agree with God and is opposite of God’s ideas, reveals the alarming truth that:

A.  Many people simply do not read their Bibles or their involvement with the Bible is minimal.  They do not search the Scriptures to see if things they hear and see are according to God’s Bible truth.  And because they do not read or know their Bible, they are easily deceived by this and other deceptions/schemes.

B.  Many people simply do not care what the Bible has to say.  Even if they do read and know what the Bible says, they still ignore it and try to explain it away.  They are caught up in the excitement and emotion of what is happening. Even though it is false, being part of this activity overrides Bible truth.

These are just symptoms of the “feel good” mentality that has taken over the world today, where “if it feels good, do it”, everyone has to be “entertained” all the time and people are leaning toward occultic spirituality over God’s truth.

All this is very, very disturbing. This is because now that we know what God’s view on speaking in tongues is, then we must ask ourselves this question:

What is really happening with the speaking in tongues in churches today?

It clearly does not follow the written instruction God gives to us in His Holy Word, the Bible.  Since today’s beliefs and practices are not according to the Bible, then what is it and where exactly is it coming from?  We know it does not have its origin in God, so its origin must be from elsewhere.

People are taught lies about what speaking in tongues is.  They are caught up in the frenzy of the emotion and excitement.  The power of suggestion is a very powerful thing.  When your defenses are down, you can be deceived – you can even deceive yourself.

Everything starts with being deceived and following lies.  Lies are demonic in origin, just like what happened to Adam and Eve: the lie had to be planted first by the enemy, Satan, before sin and everything else that is destructive, can follow.  When you turn away from God’s truth in the Bible, you are turning toward lies that come from the enemy.

By itself, it is already a sad fact to say that this false speaking in tongues is an invention of the mind of man.  Unfortunately, however, it is much, much more than that.  There is a spiritual aspect to this, but as we see, if it is not according the Bible, than it cannot be God’s holy spirit at work here.  Therefore, the spirit that is involved comes from somewhere, and someone, else.

What people are being filled with are not just lies instead of God’s truth, but they are also being filled with demonic spirits instead of God’s holy spirit.  All that the enemy Satan needs is a little opening to get through and work with.

Remember the parables the Lord Jesus taught that if we are in Christ and He in us, a person can protect his home and keep himself pure and in order. They are both related:

Luke 11:

21  When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed.

22  But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him,

     he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder.

23  He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters.

24 “ When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest,

      and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’

25   And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.

26   Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there;

      and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”     (NASB)

Jesus is telling us that we must be careful when we make ourselves an empty slate. To whom do we give ourselves over?  And if we are clean, then we must REMAIN clean.   We must always be vigilant, because the enemy is like a hungry lion looking for prey:

1 Peter 5:

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being

    accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.     (NASB)

The enemy is constantly looking for your defenses to be down – for your mind and heart to be open for him to attack.  We cannot let our guards down and let something else move in.

We cannot just empty ourselves and give ourselves over to just anything.  What resides in us should be of God and Christ.  When we have God and Christ within us, our defenses are strong and cannot be broken into. The way we know we have God and Christ is if we know and follow Bible truth.

It sounds simple, but these parables apply to all people in all circumstances, not just this.  If we are not doing something according to the Bible ONLY, then we must not just “let ourselves go” and hand over ourselves to something.  To do so is to not adhere to the Bible which means it will be without God and His blessing – and therefore what we hand ourselves over to and are now filled by, is not of God, but will be of the world, of sin, of Satan.

We can clearly see that this is what is happening with the false speaking in tongues.  With the Bible truth not known or being followed, demonic forces take advantage of this Biblical teaching with its supernatural manifestations.  Remember that the enemy loves to be as God, to imitate God and deceive us.  The demons with their power and influences, with the lies, power of suggestion, our emotions, etc. create the empty slate that they want – and then they go on to fill it as they see fit.

The Lord Jesus tells us in these parables and all His teachings that God and Christ must come first, and they must remain first.  This means the Word of God, the Bible, must be and remain first.  It will keep us on the narrow path to eternal life, and not the broad path that leads to destruction.  It will strengthen our defenses so we cannot be led astray. When we stray from the Bible and let our defenses down, we allow the clean slate to be filled with all dirt and uncleanliness, and things that not of God, but of the enemy.

We must not let the enemy take residence and control of our lives.  We must kick him out.  The way we do this is turn back to the Word of God, the Bible only, and turn away from the enemy.  If you earnestly seek God’s truth and are completely honest with yourself, then you will see that what is being practiced in many churches, like the Pentecostal and True Jesus churches, is not the speaking in tongues the Bible teaches, and therefore what they are doing is demonically controlled. Leave immediately and do not get involved.

Did you know that one such believer who the writer personally knows found that they cannot say ‘Hallelujah’ even when they tried to while speaking in these tongues?   ‘Hallelujah’ means “Everyone, praise YAH” (YAH is God’s name; the ‘j’ should be a ‘y’), often translated as “Praise the LORD.  Hallelujah flows from even a non-believer’s lips and in a supposedly heavenly language we are prevented from praising YAH’s name?  Is there something really wrong with this?

Flee from this!

Keep your mind clean, but not empty – fill it with God and Christ and the Bible truth only.

NOTE: Please stay away also from dealing with “psychics” or mediums that supposedly contact the dead which are really only demons, and use a person as a medium (point of contact between man and the “other side”).  Also stay away from yoga which is Eastern mysticism made to look like exercise, because it uses the same tactic as speaking in tongues, where you are emptied of yourself to allow other and evil things to fill it instead.  Please see the article: ‘The Dangers of Yoga’.

Everything must be according to what God says in the Word of God, the Bible only. When we do this, we will not only be freed from this false speaking in tongues, but we will also not be deceived by the false prophets and false christs who use signs and wonders to deceive which Jesus said will occur during these last days which we are in:

Matthew 24:

23   “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it.

24   For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect.

25   See, I have told you beforehand.   (NKJV)

Indeed, this false speaking in tongues is a part of these false signs and wonders, and it is an easy first step into the door of your mind and heart that the enemy needs to lead you headlong into even worse things – into the grasp of the enemy’s Beast and False Prophet.

Praise God that you will see the truth and be freed.  Not just to be free of the bondage of these false tongues, but to be free of ALL lies and traditions that oppose God’s truth in the Bible.  We need the Bible truth only to be able to endure our trials and stand in the day of decision.

Again, keep your mind clean, but not empty – fill it and focus it with God and Christ and the Bible truth only.
