Baptize in Jesus' Name - not the Jehovah's Witnesses organization

by Bill Wong

The Jehovah’s Witnesses (Watchtower Society) is most well-known for their belief that the Lord Jesus Christ is a created being, the archangel Michael. However, we must not be blinded into thinking that this is the only doctrine the Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that is false. There are many other reasons to not follow the Jehovah’s Witnesses – they teach many other false doctrines.

One such false doctrine is the un-Biblical practice of baptism into the name of the organization and not in the name of Jesus.

God’s Word tells us that Jesus Christ is the only mediator:

1 Timothy 2:

5   For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;   (AKJV)

The Bible says we are all parts of one body who is Christ and Christ is our head:

1 Corinthians 12:

12      For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body,

though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.

13      For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks,

whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

14      For the body is not one member, but many.

27      Now you are Christ's body, and individually members of it.   (NASB)

Ephesians 4:

15      but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head --- Christ ---

16      from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.   (NKJV)

The Bible tells us we are to be baptized into Christ and in His name:

Acts 2:

36      "Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ--this Jesus whom you crucified."

37      Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles,

       "Brethren, what shall we do?"

38      Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins;

and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.   (NASB)

Acts 8:

14      Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God,

they sent Peter and John to them,

15      who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

16      For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17   Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. (NKJV)

Acts 10:

48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.

Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.   (NASB)

Acts 19:

4        Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him,

        that is, in Jesus."

5        When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

(NASB)

Acts 22:

2        "A certain Ananias, a man who was devout by the standard of the Law, and well spoken of by all the Jews who lived there,

13      came to me, and standing near said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very time I looked up at him.

14      "And he said, 'The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and

to hear an utterance from His mouth.

15      'For you will be a witness for Him to all men of what you have seen and heard.

16      'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.'

(NASB)

Romans 6:

3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?   (NASB)

Galatians 3:

26      For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

27      For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

28      There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female;

for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29      And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.

(NASB)

We see also in 1 Corinthians 1 that baptism must be in a name, and that name cannot be just any name, but it must be the Lord Jesus’ name:

1 Corinthians 1:

10       Now I exhort you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all agree and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment.

11      For I have been informed concerning you, my brethren, by Chloe's people, that there are quarrels among you.

12      Now I mean this, that each one of you is saying, "I am of Paul," and "I of Apollos," and "I of Cephas," and "I of Christ."

13      Has Christ been divided? Paul was not crucified for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul?

14      I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius,

15      so that no one would say you were baptized in my name.

(NASB)

We are baptized into Christ and not an organization. Prospective Jehovah’s Witnesses members are baptized into their “spirit-directed” organization (the Watchtower Society). This conflicts with the Bible’s instructions and shows that the Watchtower Society seeks to be the lord over its members’ lives.

This organization is inserting itself as mediator apart from Christ.  Instead of Christ as your Lord, it sets itself as ruler of your life.  This is denying Christ's sufficiency as sacrifice, High Priest and Lord. Our salvation comes directly from Christ alone as mediator by the grace of God.  God uses no human organization to extend his mercy, love and grace.  An organization that promotes the belief that it has this intercessory authority ignores Biblical authority and truth.  To say that by the works the organization commands you to do can help you gain salvation only compounds this error by teaching another un-Biblical doctrine.

Exercising its own authority above God’s manifests itself by putting the writings and beliefs of the organization over the Bible as more important.  The Watchtower Society even goes so far as to use their own version of the Bible, the New World Translation, which was created solely to promote their false doctrine that Jesus is a created being, an angel. The Bible must speak for itself and not have the writings of men, including a biased New World Translation, be the doctrinal authority over the true Word of God. This does not serve God's purpose, but the purpose of the organization exerting that influence.

Controlling everything people can see, hear, think, and do, is propaganda and betrays a totalitarian mentality that serves to indoctrinate its members to a certain point of view.  History shows that organizations that manipulate the masses in this way never have the well-being of the masses they control in mind, but to promote questionable views and hold power – it is mind control, not freedom to seek and know true liberty, whether in secular society or especially in God through Christ. False prophets, in particular, have always shown to be all about keeping power and controlling people.

The Bible teaches there is only one name in heaven that all will bow and it is this same name we are to be baptized in, the author and finisher of our faith:

Philippians 2:

5        Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,

6        who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped,

7        but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men.

8        Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

9        For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,

10      so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11      and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

(NASB)

Hebrews 12:

2     Looking to Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross,

despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.   (AKJV)
