Jehovah's Witnesses 144,000 doctrine is not true

by Bill Wong

The Jehovah’s Witnesses (Watchtower Society) is most well-known for their belief that the Lord Jesus Christ is a created being, the archangel Michael. However, there are many other reasons to not follow the Jehovah’s Witnesses – they teach many other false doctrines.

One such false doctrine is their false doctrine of who the 144,000 are which finds absolutely no support anywhere in the Bible.

The Watchtower Society teaches that the 144,000 in Revelation 7 and 14 are the truly anointed (only they have holy spirit) by God who are guaranteed salvation and taken to rule in heaven with Jesus (who they believe is the archangel Michael, but Jesus is not), while the rest of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, if found favorable by the organization, will inherit the restored paradise on earth.  These earthbound Jehovah’s Witnesses will never see Jesus.

This is rewriting Biblical teaching in several ways.

First of all, once Jesus/Michael did not appear in 1914, they began to teach the doctrine that Jesus came invisibly to rule in heaven that year, but will never rule visibly on earth. This is what they believe is Jesus’ “second coming”. However, this contradicts God’s truth. The Bible states that Jesus’ second coming to earth is highly visible:

Matthew 24:

23      "Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the Christ,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him.

24      "For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.

25      "Behold, I have told you in advance.

26      "So if they say to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go out, or, 'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them.

27      "For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.

28      "Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

29      "But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

30      "And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.

31      "And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other.

(NASB)

Revelation 1:

7        Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him.

        And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.   (NKJV)

God’s Word also says He will rule on earth and does not mention Jesus ruling in heaven with the 144,000. The 144,000 are with Him in heaven, but they rule on earth in the millennial kingdom and the New Jerusalem.  Notice the New Jerusalem comes down from heaven onto earth as God tabernacles among men again (and forever). Both God and the Lamb (Jesus) will reign on earth:

Revelation 21:

1        Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea.

2        And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

3        And I heard a loud voice from the throne, saying, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is among men, and He will dwell among them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself will be among them,

10      10      And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem,

                  coming down out of heaven from God,

22      I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.

23      And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb.

24      The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it.

25      In the daytime (for there will be no night there) its gates will never be closed;

26      and they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it;

27      and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.   (NASB)

It must be noted that there are actually two sets of 144,000.  To find out who these two sets of 144,000 really are, please read the article: ‘God's Salvation Plan in the Biblical Feast Days’, in the sections regarding the Wavesheaf Offering, Pentecost and the Feast of Tabernacles.

Secondly, the Jehovah’s Witnesses take the 144,000 number in Revelation 7:4-8 literally, but from the same verses, argue that the tribes of Israel of 12,000 each are figurative and reinterpret the tribes to mean themselves:

Revelation 7:

4        And I heard the number of those who were sealed. One hundred and forty-four thousand of all the tribes

       of the children of Israel were sealed:

5        of the tribe of Judah twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Reuben twelve thousand were sealed;

       of the tribe of Gad twelve thousand were sealed;

6        of the tribe of Asher twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Naphtali twelve thousand were sealed;

       of the tribe of Manasseh twelve thousand were sealed;

7        of the tribe of Simeon twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Levi twelve thousand were sealed;

        of the tribe of Issachar twelve thousand were sealed;

8        of the tribe of Zebulun twelve thousand were sealed; of the tribe of Joseph twelve thousand were sealed;

        of the tribe of Benjamin twelve thousand were sealed.     (NKJV)

How did they arrive at the interpretation that the tribes are really Jehovah’s Witnesses?

To take the number literally and the people (tribes) figuratively makes no sense, but to be self-serving. They are either both literal (144,000 from Israel), or both figurative (undisclosed/vast number from true believers of God and His Christ), and not a convenient mix.

Notice, however, that even by their own reasoning, the number is wrong. The Bible shows there is an innumerable multitude that will serve in His presence:

Revelation 7:

9        After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,

10      and crying out with a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!"

11      All the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living creatures,

        and fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,

12      saying: " Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,

       Be to our God forever and ever. Amen."

13      Then one of the elders answered, saying to me, "Who are these arrayed in white robes, and where did they come from?"

14      And I said to him, "Sir, you know." So he said to me, "These are the ones who come out of the great tribulation, and washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

15      Therefore they are before the throne of God, and serve Him day and night in His temple.

        And He who sits on the throne will dwell among them.

16      They shall neither hunger anymore nor thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any heat;

17      for the Lamb who is in the midst of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to living fountains of waters. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."   (NKJV)

So if this innumerable multitude is in heaven then it is much more than 144,000. Unless this multitude is meant to be those on earth? But then these believers are standing before the presence of the Lamb and will see Jesus on earth. Either way, Jehovah’s Witnesses are wrong in saying that this elite 144,000 will rule with Jesus in heaven. It is simply not true.

And again, the Bible teaches that those who did not take the mark of the Beast and worship him will be rewarded and be raised to life again to reign with Jesus Christ for 1000 years. This shows clearly that these people are neither the 144,000 or the “other” class, so their doctrine of the 144,000 is again proven false:

Revelation 20:

4        And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

5        But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6        Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power,

        but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

(NKJV)

The Watchtower Society is teaching a false elite class and lower working class which is not Biblical. This teaching of an elite 144,000 of “guaranteed” saved people while the others are not (who essentially must work for their salvation by going door to door, selling subscriptions, etc.) is a doctrine of works for salvation and creates two classes of people with one being saved and the other’s salvation is left in question. All of this is false and just a device to exercise control and fear.

The Bible teaches we are all ONE:

Romans 12:

4        For just as we have many members in one body and all the members do not have the same function,

5        so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another.   (NASB)

1 Corinthians 1:

2   To the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints,

    with all that in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both their's and our's:   (AKJV)

Galatians 3:

27  For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

28  There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female;

     for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

29  And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise.

(NASB)

This teaching of the 144,000 is not Biblical in many respects.

I know Jehovah’s Witnesses really love God, but they must know the truth and break out of the bondage and control that this false teaching of the 144,000 has over most of its believers.
